Climate The weather is superb. With an average year-round temperature of 77 degrees and 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, you can head for the outdoors every day. January is the coolest month with average temperatures ranging between 57 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Gentle coastal breezes help keep winters mild and summers comfortable. August, the warmest month, averages 83 degrees but air conditioning is universal, and many communities in Northern Florida record much higher temperatures. What makes Broward so appealing to business owners and corporate executives? Broward County is large enough to have the amenities of a big city without the burden of big-city problems. The atmosphere is decidedly pro-business and the tax structure is one of the nation’s most advantages. Fast economic growth, a growing work force, and large financial community make rapid business expansion easy. In addition, Broward County is home to the second busiest cruise port in the world and a major international airport. Plans are in the works for a “people-mover” between Broward’s growing airport and seaport. For now, nearly 500 domestic and international flights are scheduled at Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport daily. Tourism With more than 28,000 lodging rooms boosting the local economy, about 6.4 million visitors a year pump $3.1 billion into the local economy as they bask along 23 miles of beach, stay at more than 630 hotels and resorts, eat at more than 3,000 restaurants, and dance at about 100 nightclubs. Marine Industry The marine industry supports over 88,000 jobs in manufacturing, maintenance, and other areas representing $5.3 billion in total economic impact. Every November, Fort Lauderdale hosts one of the largest boat shows in the world, headquartered at the renowned Bahia Mar Marina. Showbiz Movie producers are choosing Broward County to shoot films more and more. Broward’s Motion Picture and Television Commission helps producers save time and money during on-location production. The office acts as a liason between production workers, local government officials, and support services. Education The school system is an important part of Broward’s economy. With 23,000 employees, it is the county’s largest employer. More than 223,000 students are enrolled. Health Care Broward County’s health care industry is state of the art and an integral player in the local economy. South Florida’s multi-faceted health care industry offers opportunities for professionals at all levels. High-tech, up to date services are the norm, not the exception. Education programs at local hospitals also teach interested residents how to lead healthy lives. Nearly 23,000 Registered and Practical Nurses service the area as do hundreds of health care technology staffers. Bottom line: It is a good place to invest in the health care industry. It is also a good place to work in the field or receive care as a patient. Local Government Business incentives, low taxes, and a streamlined regulatory process make corporate resettlement a snap. Broward businesses not only enjoy picture-postcard surroundings, but they can take advantage of a conservative state fiscal policy that translates into many economic incentives and tax exemptions: no state or local personal income tax, no inventory tax, no corporate franchise tax on capital stock, and so on. In fact a Personal Income Tax is prohibited by Florida’s Constitution. About half of the state’s general tax revenues come from a six percent sales tax. That means tourists play a key role in paying for government services making less of a burden for you and your company. |
